Week of Welcome

Leading the prayer and Philippine National Anthem were the SSC President Christine May S. Escala and the ESSU Chorale, respectively. Then, the Vice – President for Academic Affairs, Research and Extension, Dr. Emilia L. Baquilod expressed her bliss on the affair and gave her warm words of welcome.

Taking the cue from Prof. Ginalyn A. Avila, the artistic director of the event, students, were formally presented by their college deans. But instead of simply waving and cheering, they did something far better. To symbolize their entrance to the University, the freshmen, transferees and shifters passed under two flags held by two students forming a shape of a triangle. It was a rhapsody of colors, as blue, green, yellow, orange, violet, pink, red and white took turns in carrying out their entrance.

Right after, the University Officials were introduced by the PRIMO Director, Prof. Arnel A. Balbin. Then the University President, Dr. Edmundo A. Campoto followed with his message. The President told the audience how ESSU is transforming into one of the best hubs for education in the region.

It came as no surprise what happened next. Pails, basins in varying sizes and colors, including several bags of rice at five (5) kilos and two (2) kilos were given to the students through a raffle draw. There was excitement and thrill, as the students shouted their names hoping the next ticket was theirs.

Aptly called, Padasig, the next part in the program delivered what it promised. The Karasikas Performing Arts Guild demonstrated their grace in their hip – hop and ballroom dance. The ESSU Chorale’s rendition of pop songs was heavenly. Finally, Teatro Lantawan presented a hair – raising interpretation of what happened during typhoon Yolanda with their play, Sanap.

Almost soon enough, the affair was coming to a close with the Vice President for Administration, Dr. Ernesto T. Anacta giving his closing remarks. But, as the crowd was beginning to disperse, everyone started looking up and to their amazement, saw a sparkling display of fireworks. All was in awe. The students on the ground and even the faculty and staff on stage were motionless as they uttered their “Wow”. The dark night was suddenly lit. It was unforgettable. Surely, the Welcome Program will be talked about for years to come.
