ESSU Salcedo proposes Organic Fertilizer Production Project in major typhoon-stricken areas of Leyte and Eastern Samar

The project aims to produce environment-friendly and high quality organic fertilizers at low cost for vegetable production. Likewise, it will showcase the technology of producing organic fertilizers and their application in vegetable container gardening and other modes of production. It will also teach beneficiaries on the various aspects of organic fertilizer production and utilization.

The application of IMO (Indigenous Microorganism) which is already a proven research-based applied production program of the Ecological Farm and Resource Management Institute of the Visayas State University (VSU) and other organic fertilizer methods developed by Benguet State University, Central Luzon State University, and the University of the Philippines Los Baños will be utilized.

The implementation of the project will be spearheaded by the Visayas State University in cooperation with the Department of Science and Technology- Region 8, and ESSU Salcedo.

Three organic fertilizer plants will be set up. Organic Fertilizer Plant 1 will be in VSU, OFP 2 will be in DOST 8, Tacloban, Leyte, and OFP 3 in ESSU Salcedo, Eastern Samar. Each OFP has its own typhoon-stricken area focused beneficiaries. VSU will serve the people in Ormoc, Baybay, Abuyog, and Mahaplag, Leyte. On the other hand, DOST 8 will have Mayorga, Tolosa, Tanauan, Palo, and Alang-Alang, Leyte. While ESSU Salcedo will focus in Guiuan, Salcedo, Quinapondan, Giporlos, Balangiga, and Lawaan, Eastern Samar. All in all, the project aims to serve 2,000 households.
